A new “alternate reality” series is headed to Amazon, and it’s from a couple of names you may already know. According to recent reports, a new show from Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder and Straight Outta Compton producer Will Packer is headed to the streaming service.
Not too much about the series has been revealed yet, but the series McGruder is most known for (Boondocks) received almost universal praise for the way it handled sensitive and politically incorrect subjects. And if ever a time was ripe for humor and political commentary, it’s now.
While the new series certainly won’t be a Boondocks clone, Inverse.com believes a similar show could be incredibly successful. “With the socio-political climate of the United States so fractured and only getting worse, McGruder would have so much material to comment on that the show might never end,” they wrote. “In this past year alone, marginalized groups have become much more vocal about the injustices that wider society has chosen to ignore.”
The fact that McGruder is working with Straight Outta Compton producer Will Packer and just came off of Black Jesus (which follows a black Jesus Christ living in modern Compton) certainly seems to suggest that the series may be in same vein as Boondocks, but that’s yet to be seen at this point.
