For any streaming addicts who’ve been on the fence about adding Amazon Prime to your lineup, today might be the day to climb down and open your wallet. Amazon is running a one-day promotion today that discounts the price of an annual Amazon Prime membership from $99 to $79. That’s twenty bucks saved that you can put toward Christmas presents. Or, you know, alcohol to help carry you through the holidays.
The Amazon Prime promotion runs today only, from 12am ET until 11:59pm PT. If you’re an existing Prime customer whose subscription is up for renewal, here’s the bad news: this discount is only available to new customers. But you’re welcome to change your name and put on a fake mustache or something. Maybe you can trick ’em. (Streaming Observer does not recommend or endorse trying to trick Amazon, with or without with a fake mustache.)
If you’re on the other side of the Pond, there’s a similar promotion running in the U.K.: customers in the land of Brexit will be able to add a Prime subscription for PS59 instead of PS79.
So, what exactly does an Amazon Prime membership get you? Access to the extensive Amazon Prime Video and Prime Music libraries, all available streaming anytime for free. That means access to excellent shows such as Transparent, The Man in the High Castle, and, eventually, the next show from the guy who created Mad Men. Frankly, that’s reason enough to grab a subscription for a TV junkie like myself. But there’s more, too.
Prime Photos provides unlimited cloud photo storage. Find something to read in the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library. And, of course, you’ll get free one-day delivery on eligible items ordered through Amazon. And since next week is Thanksgiving, Prime customers will also get early access to some of Amazon’s Black Friday deals. So there’s another way you could blow that twenty dollars this sale will save you.
The promotion is also timed to the release of the Amazon original series The Grand Tour. The show reunites former Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May in “a show about adventure, excitement and friendship… as long as you accept that the people you call friends are also the ones you find extremely annoying. Sometimes it’s even a show about cars.” Sounds like a grand old time.
The first episode of The Grand Tour is now available for streaming and download for Prime customers in the U.K., U.S., Germany, Austria, and Japan.
