A fellow Brit will be following Sir Patrick Stewart into the Star Trek captain’s chair. The new series Star Trek: Discovery, which will be streaming on CBS All Access, has named Jason Isaacs (of Harry Potter fame) as the captain of the USS Discovery.
Isaacs will be playing Captain Lorca, and he follows in some pretty big shoes, behind names like William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula. And while those names certainly stand above Isaacs for the time being, it’s worth noting that as far as the show’s timeline is concerned, Lorca predates even Captain Kirk. So Captain Lorca will certainly be influential to the rest of the series. Note to superfans: Star Trek: Discovery is taking place outside of the “Kelvin Timeline” that the current movies take place in.
The unique thing is though, we know that Captain Lroca won’t be the star. That’s going to be Lieutenant Commander Rainsford, played by Sonequa Martin-Green (who you probably know from The Walking Dead). CBS also announced the casting of actress Mary Wiseman as Cadet Tilly, a student assigned to the Discovery in her last year of Starfleet Academy.
Star Trek: Discovery will take place 10 years before the events of the original Star Trek. It’s the first new show from the franchise in 12 years, with the last being the poorly received Star Trek: Enterprise back in 2005.
