DIRECTV NOW Adds 14 New Fox Affiliates

Fox and AT&T have reached a deal to bring 14 new local Fox affiliates to DIRECTV NOW. That brings the total to more than 30 cities that have their local Fox station live (more than 90% of the top 20 markets).

Most of the new markets were added Monday of this week, including San Diego, Seattle, and Denver. Other cities included in the deal are Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Mich., Greensboro, N.C., Harrisburg, Pa., Hartford, Conn., Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, and St. Louis.

Local networks have been one of the biggest trouble points for new streaming TV services of late, with many cities still left without access to their city’s affiliates. YouTube TV actually limited the launch of their new service to only a few markets (including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Philadelphia) where they had local rights to ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC feeds. And Sling TV just unveiled a new device called AirTV that lets users add local broadcasts to their guide with an over the air antenna.

Speaking about the new networks, Mike Biard, president of distribution for Fox Networks Group, said “We’re excited about the power of DIRECTV NOW to expand the premium TV marketplace and provide greater access to our programming nationwide. Today’s addition of 14 Fox-affiliated stations, and the others that will be launching soon, together with our portfolio of national and regional cable networks, will allow DIRECTV NOW to deliver the full experience of our industry-leading news, entertainment and sports brands, while affording consumers the convenience and flexibility to watch whenever and wherever they want.”

This move does indeed mean that significantly more customers can now get local programming with DIRECTV NOW, and addition that Dan York, chief content officer for AT&T is excited about. “We are continuing to expand our lineup of local, regional and national programming on DIRECTV NOW so our customers have access to an impressive lineup at a great value.”
