All signs pointed to Amazon’s The Grand Tour being a major streaming event, and the new series featuring the former hosts of Top Gear did not disappoint. Not only was the first episode of The Grand Tour a whopping success, it now holds the crown as Amazon’s most-streamed original show ever, dethroning the previous champion, The Man in the High Castle.
Like Netflix, Amazon is elusive when it comes to providing concrete streaming numbers for their shows, but Deadline reports viewership of The Grand Tour‘s premiere episode was “in the millions in the U.S., UK, Germany, Austria and Japan over the opening weekend.” The show debuted on Amazon Prime this past Friday, November 18.
The Grand Tour reunites Top Gear‘s Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, sending them around the globe for more vehicle-related mayhem. The show also incorporates a live show element, with travelling tent appearances popping up everywhere from Johannesburg to Nashville to Dubai. The show’s remaining 11 episodes will debut weekly for the next few months, available streaming for all Amazon Prime customers in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Austria, and Japan. The Grand Tour will premiere in additional markets worldwide after wrapping that initial Prime run.
While we don’t know the exact numbers, there’s no doubt Amazon is going to be happy with The Grand Tour‘s success. They’d been hyping the hell out of it in recent weeks, even instituting a one-day discount on Amazon Prime subscriptions last Friday to coincide with the show’s launch. None of that is surprising, given the rumors that Amazon may have spent as much as $250 million to acquire the show, beating out Netflix in a bidding war.
With the streaming landscape becoming ever more competitive, having a stable of exciting, buzzworthy original content is going to become even more crucial than it has been. With the success of The Grand Tour, there’s no doubt — assuming there ever was — that Amazon is playing for keeps. Watch your back, Netflix.
