Kathryn Hahn is craving more than six degrees of Kevin Bacon in a steamy new Amazon Prime series with a provocative name: I Love Dick. The pilot went up last year as part of one of Amazon’s regular Pilot Season events, but now the full first season is about to arrive. If you’re a fan of sordid tales of lust, marital difficulties, and a shirtless Kevin Bacon rocking a cowboy hat and a scowl, then you might just love Dick too.
I Love Dick stars Hahn and Griffin Dunne as married couple Chris and Sylvere. She’s a filmmaker, he’s a writer, and both uproot their lives from New York to the quirky artistic community of Marfa, Texas. He’s taking up a residency to finish writing his magnum opus about the Holocaust, but her own career hits the skids after her latest film is booted from the Venice Film Festival over a music rights issue. Chris’ feelings of fifth-wheeldom are sidetracked when she meets the pillar of rugged manhood who is Dick (Kevin Bacon), a professor with whom both Chris and Sylvere soon become obsessed. As Amazon’s official description puts it, “Told in Rashomon-style shifts of POV, I LOVE DICK charts the unraveling of a marriage, the awakening of an artist and the deification of a reluctant messiah.” Check out the trailer.
Created by Jill Soloway (Transparent), Amazon’s I Love Dick is based on the infamous feminist novel by Chris Kraus. First published in 1997, it mixed fiction with memoir, charting Kraus’ obsession with “Dick” — a character who was eventually identified as being based on University of California, Santa Barbara Professor of Art and Media Studies Dick Hebdige. (Who, in case you’re wondering, does not actually look like Kevin Bacon.)
The pilot is currently available streaming for Amazon Prime subscribers. The full first season of I Love Dick premieres May 11, 2017.
