The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Amazon Greenlights Gilmore Girls Creator’s Series for Two Seasons

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

They’ve only made the pilot so far, but The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is already breaking records. The Amazon Studios pilot, created by The Gilmore Girls‘ Amy Sherman-Palladino, has become the first Amazon Original Series to receive a multi-season pickup order from the streaming giant. Amazon has greenlit not one, but two seasons of the period drama.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of several shows offered up in Amazon’s latest “Pilot Season” event, when viewers can sample new pilots for themselves — and then rate and offer their feedback on whether they should get a full-season pick-up. Written and directed by Sherman-Palladino, Mrs. Maisel stars Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards) as 1950s housewife turned stand-up comic Miriam “Midge” Maisel. Here’s Amazon’s official synopsis of the series:

It’s 1958 Manhattan and Miriam “Midge” Maisel has everything she’s ever wanted – the perfect husband, kids, and Upper West Side apartment. But when her life suddenly takes a turn and Midge must start over, she discovers a previously unknown talent — one that will take her all the way from the comedy clubs of Greenwich Village to a spot on Johnny Carson’s couch.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s cast also includes Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire) as Midge’s husband Joel Maisel, Alex Borstein (Family Guy) as Susie Myerson, Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Midge’s father Abe, and Marin Hinkle (Two and a Half Men) as Midge’s mother Rose.

Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama & VR for Amazon Studios, said of Mrs. Maisel:

In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause. Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next and for a long time to come. That made it an easy decision to order two seasons from Amy and her incredible cast. We can’t wait to bring it to customers soon.

This isn’t the first streaming original series for Sherman-Palladino. Last year, she shepherded the return of her hit Gilmore Girls for Amazon’s competition. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life reunited the stars of the popular CW series and generated lots of buzz for Netflix. There are rumors of a follow-up in the works.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel pilot is now available streaming on Amazon Prime. Viewers can also check out several other Amazon Originals pilots, including the sci-fi joint Oasis and the pot comedy Budding Prospects.
