Amazon’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Lands Kevin Pollak

Kevin Pollak in Middle Men

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was the clear breakout hit of Amazon’s most recent Pilot Season. The period comedy debuted its pilot this past March. Both viewers and Amazon apparently loved the series, as Amazon gave it a two-season order less than a month later. Now Mrs. Maisel‘s star continues to rise with the addition of Kevin Pollak to the cast.

Created by Gilmore Girls‘ honcho Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a housewife with a wonderful life in 1958 Upper West Side Manhattan. But when that life takes a turn, Midge discovers she’s got a knack for something wholly unexpected: stand-up comedy. Against the odds, she embarks on a career that will eventually land her on Johnny Carson’s couch.

Deadline reports that veteran comedian and character actor Kevin Pollak will be joining The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in a recurring role as Morris “Moishe” Maisel, Midge’s father-in-law. Here’s how Deadline describes his character:

…a tough, streetwise man who is not afraid of anything. He feels like no one owes him anything and he owes no one anything as well. Self-made in every sense of the word, Moishe believes himself to be a man of God at home but a man of the streets at work.

Also joining the cast is Bailey De Young (Faking It). She’ll be playing Midge’s friend Imogene. Last year, De Young appeared in Netflix’s Gilmore Girls reunion, A Day in the Life, so obviously Amy Sherman-Palladino likes the cut of her jib. Pollak and De Young join a cast that already includes Alex Borstein, Tony Shalhoub, and more.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s pilot earned tons of critical praise, and it’s currently rocking a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s the sort of concept that lends itself to cameos by lots of current comedians, if the showrunners decide to go that direction, and there’s plenty of narrative potential in the story of a woman trying to make it as a stand-up in an era when society would discourage her from leaving the home. Brosnahan has also got plenty of acting chops, having played the tragic and troubled Rachel Posner on Netflix’s House of Cards.

Amazon Prime subscribers can stream the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel pilot on Amazon Instant Video. The full first season likely won’t hit until sometime in 2018.
