Netflix is about to bring the funny in a big way. Continuing their impressive run of original specials from top-tier comedic talents, the streaming service will next week debut not one, but two brand-new stand-up specials from the legendary Dave Chappelle.
Dave Chappelle: Deep in the Heart of Texas was filmed in Austin, Texas in 2015. His second special, The Age of Spin, was shot at the Hollywood Palladium in 2016. Either one of them would be must-see viewing for stand-up fans, but Netflix is dropping both of them on the same damn day: next Tuesday, March 21. Is there a trailer? Of course there’s a freaking trailer. Here’s Dave riffing on O.J. Simpson, ISIS, and the perils of table salt.
This double-feature marks the first stand-up specials Chappelle has released in over a decade…and there’s more to come. Last year, he partnered with Netflix to release both of these shows as well as a third special, which has yet to be filmed. The original report suggested Netflix would debut all three specials at the same time, but apparently they changed their mind and decided to get these two out the door sooner rather than later.
Chappelle notoriously withdrew from the spotlight at the height of his fame in the early 2000s, leaving his mega-hit Comedy Central series Chappelle’s Show dead in the water just as it had become a pop-culture juggernaut. While he’s been doggedly working the stand-up circuit in recent years, but these specials, along with his appearance on SNL last year, suggest Dave is ready to remind everybody why he was such a big deal in the first place.
The dual Chappelle specials are just a couple of the huge deals Netflix has been making on the comedy front in recent months. They spent a whopping $40 million for a pair of Chris Rock specials, they snagged exclusive rights to two Louis CK specials, and they even lined up a two-fer of comedy specials from Jerry Seinfeld.
