Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Coming to Nintendo Switch “In Time”

The Nintendo Switch is off to a blazing start in America, with the system breaking all sorts of records at launch. But there is one glaring omission – streaming video.

While the new Nintento gaming console doesn’t currently support any streaming video services, Nintendo is out to change that. But they’re not really in a hurry to do it. “We’re talking to a range of companies about other services, companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon,” said Nintendo America chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aime.”

A firm timeline wasn’t given for when streaming video apps would be available for the Switch, with Fils-Aime only saying support would be added “in time.”

Fils-Aime made a point to say that gaming is the focus of the Switch for now, noting that streaming video is a “non differentiators.” That mean it’s not something that could set Switch apart from other consoles, so it’s just not a priority. “What differentiates us is the way you play with the Nintendo Switch and what you can play, he said. “And that will continue to be our focus into the future as we continue driving this platform.”

In short, Nintendo thinks streaming video will be a nice benefit, but it doesn’t think it will help sell more consoles.

Of course, a slow embrace of streaming video isn’t new for Nintendo. The company was also slow in bringing streaming video to their Wii console at launch, finally rolling it out over a year after the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony got it. Lack of Netflix support clearly didn’t hurt the Wii, as it would go on to outsell both of those consoles.

Lack of streaming video support doesn’t seem to be hurting the Switch either, as Nintendo has announced it sold more consoles in two days than any other system in that same timeframe.
