Netflix is releasing so much new original content these days that it’s easy to lose track of every new series or film. Yet just this week, Netflix released a trailer for another upcoming original series called Atypical, a comedy starring Keir Gilchrist, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Michael Rappaport. The series looks to fill a gap in Netflix’s family-oriented comedy offerings.
The series follows an 18-year old named Sam (Gilchrist) as he enters adulthood and reaches all of the typical young adult milestones: dating, increased independence, and leaving home. Sam’s coming-of-age tale explores all of the highs and lows of crossing into adulthood while learning how to cope with the complexities of being on the Autism spectrum.
At its heart, Atypical is a tale of a family coming together to meet head-on any obstacles which stem from Sam’s “atypical” personality. “Mom, I’m getting older,” Sam tells his horrified mother Elsa (Jason Leigh) in the trailer, “and at some point I really really hope I get to see boobs.” Atypical was created and written by Robia Rashad, best known for her work on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, and directed by Seth Gordon (The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters).
All eight episodes of the first season of Atypical will premiere on Netflix on August 11, 2017.
