Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming original series She’s Gotta Have It based on the 1986 Spike Lee film of the same name. That film won the legendary director a Cannes Film Festival “Award of the Youth” award for the foreign film category, as well as a “Best First Feature” award at the 1987 Independent Spirit Awards. Lee will direct all of the episodes of the first season and serves as a producer alongside Barry Michael Cooper (New Jack City) and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage.
She’s Gotta Have It stars DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling, a Brooklyn artist searching for her own professional and personal identity as she enters adulthood. Darling spends much of the series finding ways to juggle all three of her lovers, Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony), Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent), and Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos) while also maintaining her professional life and relationships with friends. The teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much about the series, but from the looks of it, viewers can expect Lee’s trademark heavily-stylized cinematography made famous in classics like Do the Right Thing.
All ten episodes of season one of She’s Gotta Have It will premiere on Netflix on November 23rd – which just so happens to be Thanksgiving Day. Looks like Spike Lee fans have a perfect post-turkey binge lined up.
