While Netflix is clearly the industry leader when it comes to streaming video, it turns out the battle of “Netflix vs. Amazon Prime” might not even be necessary. The majority of people, a new survey shows, are perfectly fine having both.
The study from Morgan Stanley AlphaWise survey revealed that just under half of Netflix subscribers also have a Prime Instant Video subscription, while 60% of Amazon Prime subscribers also get Netflix. Of course, that probably has a lot to do with the fact that people subscriber to Amazon Prime just for the free shipping, but the numbers still show that there doesn’t have to be just one winner in this battle.
Morgan Stanley’s Benjamin Swinburne said he believes that the issue isn’t so much “Netflix vs. Amazon” as it is Netflix focusing on capturing their intended market. Netflix is indeed outpacing Amazon, but they’re not worried about what the competition is doing, he says. And there may be some truth to that.
Original content is key, and while many people were skeptical of Netflix’s big investment in original programming, it’s a bet that’s paid off big time. One third of respondents to this survey said that Netflix had the best original programming not just out of any streaming service, but any premium channel as well. That a number that’s up 17% from back in 2014.
It’s worth noting though, that Amazon has been investing heavily in original content recently as well, with some reports indicating they’re actually spending just as much in the category as Netflix is.
Back at the end of 2016, the numbers showed that about one third of American homes with broadband subscribed to more than one streaming service. Netflix and Amazon Video was indeed the most popular combination, with 12% of homes having a subscription to both services at once.
