Netflix‘s Marvel properties are quickly becoming some of the streaming service’s most popular franchises. After the runaway success of Daredevil, Netflix launched Jessica Jones. The series follows the heroine of the same name and is based on the Marvel comic character. Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, is a private investigator vigilante who was given superhuman strength and the ability to fly after being bombarded with radiation as a child. Ritter’s Jessica Jones is a troubled, often dark character who doesn’t fit into the stereotypical superhero mold. This honest portrayal of a complicated hero figure has resonated with fans tired of the same old good vs. evil tropes found in most superhero franchises. Season one of Jessica Jones received very favorable reviews, boasting a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Luckily for Jessica Jones fans who are itching for more, the series has reportedly begun production on season two. New York city residents living near Broadway and west 101st Street Production notices signs which state that filming on a project code-named “Violet” began on April 3rd. This same location is the ones used for exterior shots of Jones’ apartment and detective agency, so it’s not too much of a leap to assume that filming on season two has begun.
The filming of season two is believed to overlap with the filming of Netflix’s upcoming Marvel series The Defenders which also stars Ritter as Jones. Netflix and Jessica Jones are proving that the success of Marvel franchises don’t necessarily depend on the name recognition of their biggest heroes like Captain America or Iron Man. Not only has Ritter’s Jones breathed life into a rather obscure character, but she’s also shown that the world of superheroes doesn’t have to be dominated by men alone. In fact, when it comes to Jessica Jones, that applies to both sides of the camera: every episode of season two will be directed by female directors. Unfortunately for Jones fans, season two of Jessica Jones isn’t slated to land on Netflix until 2018. There is a silver lining, however: Ritter will appear as Jessica Jones in Netflix’s The Defenders which will debut later in 2017.
