It was a bit of a surprise when A&E canceled Longmire after three seasons despite decent ratings. It was the network’s most watched original scripted series, but executives feared the target demographic was just a bit too old to appeal to advertisers.
Netflix announced this week that it’s renewing the mystery series for a sixth season, but that this will be the show’s last. The final season of Longmire will have 10 episodes and is scheduled for release in 2017.
Season five of Longmire was released just about a month ago, so it will still be a while before the final season begins production. But it’s good for fans to know that closure is coming.
Netflix has dived pretty heavily into creating original content in recent years, and it hasn’t gotten around to canceling too many of it’s own productions. This show is tailored to a pretty specific audience though, and doesn’t really fit the mold of other Netflix shows.
Longmire is based on the “Walt Longmire Mysteries” books written by Craig Johnson and follows a widowed sheriff in Absaroka County, Wyoming as he tries to rebuild his life.
