Social media is creating a new generation of YouTube and Vine stars, and Netflix is betting on one of the most popular social media stars for a new series.
The unscripted series Chasing Cameron, starring Cameron Dallas, will debut on December 27, 2016 (likely timed with a winter break from school for the primary viewing audience). The series will debut in 10 parts, and will follow the teen sensation as he “looks to take his career to the next level.”
The announcement comes on the heels of the news that Twitter is shutting down Vine, making Dallas one of the last names to make it big on the platform.
Dallas was recently named the “number one most engaging digital influencer” in a recent study, and has a staggering fan base of more than 35 million followers across all of his social media accounts, including nearly 10 million on Vine alone.
Netflix won’t be the first, or the last company to try to cash in on these young social media stars and the millions of eyeballs they bring. The cast of Hulu’s recent Freakish was comprised of many of these young stars, and both Hulu and Netflix also have more social-media-star-centric productions in the works.
