Another top comedian has signed a deal for an exclusive stand up special with streaming giant Netflix. This time around, it’s Sarah Silverman getting the call, best known for her brash comedy style. The special will film in February for a May 30, 2017 release worldwide.
Silverman is no stranger to TV comedy specials. Her Sarah Silverman: We are Miracles special that aired on HBO in 2013 won her a prime time Emmy award, plus a Writers Guild nomination. She also earned an Emmy nomination for her work on The Sarah Silverman Program, which ran for about three years. Silverman also has a number of acting and voice credits to her name, so she knows her way around the screen.
The comedy special isn’t titled yet, but it will be produced by JASH, the comedy driven media that Silverman founded with Tim Heidecker, Michael Cera, Reggie Watts and Eric Wareheim. Liam Lynch is slated to direct, with Amy Zvi (from Thruline) producing with JASH.
For Netflix, this is just another in the long line of comedy names they’ve bet on. They’ve shown they won’t hesitate to pay for big names, and while a price for Silverman’s special hasn’t been set, you can pretty well guess it’s not a bad payday. Netflix has been on a roll of purchasing standup specials from some of the biggest names in comedy, like Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Patton Oswalt, Amy Schumer, and Dana Carvey. The company paid Chris Rock an impressive $40 million for two shows that will tape in 2017.
