Amazon continues to lure in top-tier talent for their original projects, and now they’ve roped one of the finest actresses of all time. Glenn Close will star in a new Amazon original TV pilot called Sea Oak…and it sounds like a weird one.
In fact, Close’s new role in Sea Oak will be closer to The Walking Dead than the powerhouse, Oscar-bait drama from which she’s made her name. The half-hour comedy project is described as “a mix of zombie drama and family revenge comedy.” Here’s the full description, according to THR:
Sea Oak revolves around Aunt Bernie (Close), a meek, unmarried woman with no children in a working-class Rust Belt city who dies tragically in a home invasion. Compelled by sheer force of dissatisfaction, she comes back from the dead full of rage and determined to get the life she never had. She proceeds to inflict a range of demands on what’s left of her nuclear family, including a quasi-stripper nephew and two feckless nieces, who live in a low-end subsidized hellhole of a housing complex called Sea Oak.
Sea Oak is being written by author George Saunders, based on his own short story, originally published in his 2000 collection entitled Pastoralia. The pilot is being directed by Hiro Murai, who’s recently been kicking ass with multiple episodes of FX’s critically acclaimed Atlanta and Legion. If Sea Oak doesn’t get picked up to series, it certainly won’t be for lack of talent assembled.
Amazon’s Sea Oak will mark Close’s first return to series television since her five-year run on the legal drama Damages, initially airing on FX before shifting to DirecTV’s Audience Channel for its last two seasons. Her role as ruthless lawyer Patty Hewes earned Close two Emmys and a Golden Globe. Sea Oak has a high bar to hurdle, but kudos to Close for jumping into such a crazy-sounding project. If it works, it could be something special.
While it will no doubt be its own thing — especially with Close in the lead — Sea Oak bears surface similarities to Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet. That show also stars a well-known actress known mainly for her feature work (Drew Barrymore) in a quirky comedy/drama about zombies. You can stream the full first season of that series over on Netflix Instant.
