One of my favorite film genres has always been horror. From the time I was little, I’ve always loved being scared. There’s something about that rush that just makes a scary movie so much fun. As an adult, I find that, on the whole I am less frightened when I watch horror, but I am always looking for that film that will make me check the locks and windows to make sure I’m safe and secure from any bumps I hear in the night.
When it comes to streaming services, horror can be hit or miss. The big services always make sure to have a nice collection around Halloween, but at other times things can be pretty basic. That’s why having a service that’s just for horror fans is a great option. Shudder is that service.
If you are a diehard horror fan you should like Shudder quite a bit. You’ll have access to a large variety of horror collections, top horror films, and International films. I found quite a few hard to find horror films and franchises, too, which certainly doesn’t hurt. There are some things you might find everywhere else, but the amount of films that are only available on Shudder makes it worth giving the service a try. For a fun twist, Shudder even includes a live TV option called Shudder TV that always has a new and interesting film available to watch. Keep reading our Shudder review, to learn more about Shudder, including more about the special features, and the Shudder free trial!
Shudder Review: What is Shudder?
Shudder is an on-demand streaming service that offers a little bit of live stream, too. The entire streaming service revolves around horror, including a large variety of subgenres that you might not find anywhere else. As we get further into this Shudder review, we’ll look at the Shudder cost and the features that make the service worthwhile. The content on Shudder ranges from Indy films and Hollywood Blockbusters to International films and Shudder TV, which will help you find new favorites. Offering the true vastness of the horror genre, Shudder attempts to offer something for every fan, and in that they succeed.
One place to find available movies is the Collections area. This area will put movies together by similarity. While there are some collections you might expect to see, a lot of them are unique and will seem self-explanatory. While there are plenty of collections, some of them include:
- A Woman’s Touch
- Bad Genes & Killer Kids
- Cult Masters: EuroHorror
- Haunted Habitations
- Into the Wild
- Psychos and Madmen
- Romantic Bloodsuckers
- Series on Shudder
- Smart Slashers
- Weird Science
- Sometimes they Come Back
- Many More!
What are the Main Shudder TV Features?
The number one question people ask is, “is Shudder worth it?” That will depend on you, but one thing I will say is that Shudder offers a great amount of horror at a fair price. Of course, each feature makes the service worth it even more. Some of the most popular features include:
- Hundreds of horror films
- A wide variety of collections and sub-genres
- A selection of horror TV shows
- A 24/7 horror live stream with Shudder TV
- New films added every week
- Films include hard-to-find films, International options, and originals
- Many collections are curated by professionals in the horror industry
- Watch on Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV, mobile devices, and computers!
- A one-week Shudder free trial
How Much Does Shudder Cost?
Shudder is available in the US, Canada, Ireland, and the UK. Prices in the US are $4.99/month or $47.88/year. To be fair, Shudder adjusts the price in all the other countries to suit the specific country currency. If you love horror, it’s certainly worth trying out. You can use the Shudder free trial to give the service a shot, and if you like it, $5/month isn’t that much to spend for the high level of horror that you’ll receive.
Both the annual and the monthly Shudder membership will start with a Shudder free trial that lasts for a full week. Unlike some services, there is no need for a Shudder promo code. Rather than using a Shudder promo code, when you sign up, your Shudder free trial will begin automatically.
If you’re hesitant to add another streaming service to your lineup, another option is to add Shudder to your Amazon Prime subscription. Thanks to Amazon Channels you can just add the Shudder Channel and get access to everything you’d get from the standalone Shudder subscription. The price is the same, as is the Shudder free trial. You can learn more about Amazon Prime in our Amazon Prime Video review.
The Bottom Line: Is Shudder Worth It?
Over the course of this Shudder review, I’ve attempted to highlight the reasons why you, as a viewer, might want Shudder. So, ultimately whether or not Shudder is worth it will depend on your specific interest in the horror genre and your willingness to pay $5/month to access the service. Overall, I think it’s definitely worth giving the Shudder free trial a shot. Horror fans have really taken to the service and after using it myself, I can’t say that I blame them. The mix of old favorites and new gems make it worth adding to my streaming selection. When you add in Shudder TV, it makes it even more worth checking out. You will rarely find the same movie on twice and most of them were new to me, which allowed me to find films I didn’t even know existed. So, don’t forget to sign up for the Shudder free trial, so you can give Shudder a shot, today!
