YouTube’s highly anticipated answer to Sling TV, DIRECTV NOW, and PlayStation Vue is officially live today. After promises that it would be in “the next few months” in February, the announcement was made today that customers in five cities could officially start watching. For now, the service is just available in LA, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Bay Area. More individual cities are planned before a nationwide rollout later this year.
What can you expect from YouTube TV? You can read our review here, but it looks pretty straightforward from the onset. The price will be right in line with their competition at $35 a month, and the channel offerings will be about the same with about 40 in the base package. There is one big advantage to YouTube TV though, and that’s the cloud DVR at no charge. Subscribers can record unlimited shows (as many as you want simultaneously even), and those shows will be saved for up to 9 months. That’s far more time than other streaming services offer, and the unlimited space is pretty attractive.
If you’re in one of the first few cities, you can take advantage of a great offer they have going on. While other streaming services offer up one week free trials, YouTube is giving subscribers 30 days totally free to get a feel for the service. And if you do decide to pay, you get a free Chromecast your first paid month.
YouTube also announced today that subscribers would have access to six new networks at no charge: BBC America, BBC World News, AMC, Sundance, FC, and WE tv.
All early indications are that YouTube TV is just another great option for people who are tired of paying for cable. Competition only makes things better for the customer, so things are looking great for cord cutters.
